George Frideric Handel composed MESSIAH in 1741 in just 24 days – an astonishing artistic feat. It remains the most performed choral music in the world and is considered one of the great masterpieces of Western culture. And why not? MESSIAH tells a dramatic story with songs that are memorable for their melodies, power, and emotion, like the instantly recognizable Hallelujah Chorus. Nearly 300 years after its premiere, MESSIAH continues to inspire and entertain.
Conductor Maria Manzo leads the Bravo! Chamber Choir, soloists, and Orchestra in our annual performance of this holiday classic.

This concert features three icons of 20th century American music. Duke Ellington composed The Sacred Concert in 1965-66. It was commissioned by and premiered at San Francisco’s Episcopal Grace Cathedral during the Civil Rights movement. While Ellington’s faith flows through his music and lyrics, he contended he was not writing “religious music.” Ellington said he was “bringing the Cotton Club Revue to church!” Aaron Copland composed his Clarinet Concerto for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. Copland blended jazz and classical styles to create a ‘crossover’ piece for Goodman – much like Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Film composer John Williams wrote Simple Gifts Suite for the election ceremony of Barack Obama. Williams incorporated the famous American hymn tune “Simple Gifts” into his own unique film music style.
Clarinetist Michael Kissinger leads the Jazz Orchestra & Bravo! Chamber Choir.
